Here I will suggest you to first of all go through the syllabus deeply of gate . As if you want to give gate exam after your b.tech course of 4 years then you have will not get enough time for preparation then you have to distract yourself from college extracurricular activities of your college and add this time for your gate preparations . Along with this, there are various subjects that are part of the college curriculum but not part of the GATE syllabus and similarly, there is the non technical part of the GATE syllabus which is not part of the college curriculum so check these things also .

And try to solve previous year question papers but before this take study material for gate preparation you can get it near by your area or you can purchase online . Further during your summer vacation join gate coaching to make your doubts clear . Thus, though GATE is a tough examination, it can be prepared for and cleared from both colleges as well as home .

for best way, start preparing from 3rd semester  if you are in 1st year. if you are in 2nd year or so on then you should start from now. Your Institute library will have GATE question papers. You can use them to know how questions are asked and in what way you have to prepare so that you can score best. if you feel that it is hard then take one online course if possible free.

You can get lecture videos free from Youtube and Unacademy. There are paid ones too. So no need to worry for material. One thing which is most important is you have to do  practice it continuously else you won't get good score.
