Hello,
How to start preparing for CAT?As mentioned by many, CAT (Common AdmissionTest) is one of the toughest exam to crack. It is the gateway to getting into prestigious IIMs and other top B-schools of India. A lot of CAT aspirantsask me how to prepare for CAT. Here I amsharing a few tips which I feel helped me in cracking this exam.

Understand the syllabus

This is a useful tip for almost any exam. Understand the syllabus by going through past years papers and official guidelines. CAT can be segmented into four broad parts-

Quantitative Ability
Data Interpretation
Logical Reasoning
Verbal Ability

The concepts used in this examination are broadly of class 10 level. However, the questions are little bit tricky to solve and require good amount of logical thinking. But it can be developed by practice.

For books and other stuff I am giving you one link

Preparation for CAT means practice. It's all about practice. With three sections in CAT viz.,
1.) VA-RC:
Start reading newspaper, if not entirely then at least the editorial page. This will not only keep you updated but also improve your reading skills and will expose you to a wide range of topics which is what is exactly required for reading comprehensions in CAT.
While attempting RC, your practice must be so thorough that you can start getting the gist in just one reading and going through one line might give you an insight of the succeeding line as well. This will help you in scoring very high in this section and with the ample amount of time in your hand before CAT'18, your practice can definitely help you. You must be able to infer the crux of the comprehensions because ultimately questions will be based on your depth understanding of comprehensions.
For VA, there is a definite pattern of questions asked, wherein either you will be asked to arrange the lines of a paragraph, or find the odd one of out among the given lines of a paragraph, or find the most apt concluding line of a paragraph, or infer the given paragraph.
Books that you can refer: Verbal Ability and reading comprehension for CAT by Nishit Sinha, How to prepare for Verbal Ability and reading comprehension for CAT by Arun Sharma and Meenakshi Upadhyay,  latest RC passages provided by study centres.
2.) DI-LR: Graph based questions (understanding of all kinds of graphs), logical reasoning questions pertaining to seating arrangements, allotment of routes, etc. The syllabus for this section is not limited. The underlying concepts might be the same but the question type and frames will differ and trend is revealing that this section has been troubling the students the most.
Books that you can refer: Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation for the CAT by Nishit Sinha,  How to prepare for logical reasoning and Verbal Ability by Arun Sharma.
3.) QA: a strong grip over concepts on topics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, modern maths will actually steer your way in this section. A good practice will help you scoring high.
Books to refer : Quantum CAT by Sarvesh K. Verma,  How to prepare for Quantitative Ability by Arun Sharma and Quantitative Ability for CAT by Nishit Sinha.
** After your basic preparation, when you feel that you are done with the concepts, join online mock test series. Give atleast 25-3 mock tests with in-depth analysis of each test to rectify your errors for the final day. Since you have good amount of time before CAT'18, you must also give sectional tests twice or thrice a month.
*Above all you can also join a good coaching centre nearby like IMS, TIME, Career Launcher, etc. whichever you feel has a good faculty in your area.
All the best!!

Hi! As I don't have any cat coaching centres in my city , which online coaching would you prefer for CAT 2018 ? Is self-study better or coaching is required. If self-study is preferred what steps can be followed.

Well, if you don't have a good coaching centre around then you can ho ahead with self-study. Buy the books that I have mentioned and start referring them, practice as many questions as possible. Devote around 4-5 hours per day, proportionately dividing your time to each section. After grasping the basic concepts pertaining to each topic, start giving sectional as well as complete mock tests.
Other than that, if you want, HANDA ka Funda is a good option for online preparation. But yes, if not for preparation then at least for mock tests, do join online test series of any coaching centre like TIME, IMS, CL,etc.
All the best!!
