You would require 8-10 months for consideration and preparing well enough. Join a coaching class like TIME, CpLC, Catking, Careerlauncher. You should devote 4 months for full preparation and solve weekly mock exams. After that devoting 1month for mock tests for each section, and then 1month for all sections together. You would need to correct and recrify mistakes and weaknesses should be focussed. In the end, just revision and more mock exams will help you alot. You should sokve more problems from bokks lkke Arun Sharma, RS agarwal, Chandresh agarwal. Try to give mock tests every week and revise them frequently to avoid mistakes. It completely depends on how comfortable you are with the syllabus of CAT. If you are pretty comfortable with the contents/syllabus, I suggest you take a 3 month course in any institute. But in this case you will have to devote at least 2-3 hrs everyday for this purpose. If you are not that much comfortable, then I suggest you to take a 6 month course and spend 7 hrs per week for the preparation. If you are very uncomfortable then I suggest you to take a.1 year course and spend 5 hrs per week for your preparation. (The times mentioned above are the time to prepare in addition to the time you spend in your coaching institute)

1 year is a good enough time depending on your current level of familiarisation with Cat. Institutes offer 1 year course generally.

If you are starting fresh you need to cover all the topics in Quantitative Ability, Verbal and LRDI. If you are willing to appear for the exam next year hence you have more than an year now which is sufficient for preparations. You should plan your schedule for this year and should proceed in the following manner:

1) Cover all the basic concepts in all the three sections.
2) Try solved examples and simple questions, these will revise your concepts and boost your confidence.
3) Solve medium and hard difficulty questions from books and preparation materials provided by  coaching institutes.

It depends on your speed but on an average you should devote 2-3 hours daily.

Once you have completed these you can start attempting your Mock CATS in the month of May next year and try to get good marks and identify your areas of strengths and weaknesses.

All the best and make good use of the available time.
