Hello

There are two specialisations in Bio engineering. Students can choose any of the following specialisation:

1. Biomedical engineer

2. Bioinformatics scientist

In order to become Biomedical engineer, students need to follow the following steps:

Step 1

Since it is a science related field, it is compulsory for the students to take up science (physics, chemistry and biology) in 10+2 and mathematics as core subjects in 10+2. These subjects will strengthen the base and will help to understand various concepts of biomedical engineering at a later stage. The candidate should score at least 50 per cent(40 per cent to 45 per cent for reserved category candidates) of the marks with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology as the major subjects of study.

Step 2

After 10+2, in order to get into a college for pursuing a bachelors course in biomedical engineering, it is important that the student clears the entrance tests to the institution of his or her choice. There are several entrance examinations for various engineering institutions across India. Some of the most popular ones entrance examinations are as follows:

JEE (Main)

JEE (Advanced)

SRMJEE

VITEEE

MU-OET

Step 3

Once the student gains admission into an engineering institution, he or she can pursue a bachelors programme in biomedical engineering. The duration of the course is four years and in this time the student learns and understands a number of concepts and principles of biomedical engineering.

Step 4

After the completion of bachelors in biomedical engineering, a student has the following two options:

Option 1: A student who has completed bachelors in biomedical engineering can start work as a biomedical engineer. From a rehab engineer, to clinical engineer, to hospital engineer or a bioinstrumentation engineer, there are several options to choose from.

Option 2: The second option for a student who has completed bachelors in biomedical engineering, is to opt for higher studies. One can do masters in biomedical engineering and after that go for Ph.D and work as researchers or scientists. Those who have completed their Ph.D. can also get into education and tech the subject in engineering colleges.

In order to become bioinformatics scientist, students need to follow following steps:

Step 1: Completion of 10+2 with appropriate subjects

Description: The students are required to complete a 10+2 level of education in physics-chemistry-biology, physics-chemistry-computer science, or physics-chemistry-biology-maths with an aggregate of 50 percent of marks or equivalent.

Step 2: Entrance Examination

Description: Several universities and colleges conduct entrance examinations to provide admissions in undergraduate level and postgraduate level programmes. The students are required to appear in entrance examinations of respective colleges and universities. We have mentioned popular entrance examinations below.

Popular Entrance Examinations

Undergraduate level examination

JEE Main: Joint Entrance Examination Main

JEE Advanced: Joint Entrance Examination Advanced

BITSAT: Birla Institute of Technology & Science Admission Test

SRMJEEE: SRM Joint Engineering Entrance Examination Engineering

Postgraduate level examination

JNU CEEB: Jawaharlal Nehru University Combined Entrance Examination for Biotechnology

ICAR AIEEA: Indian Council of Agricultural Research All India Entrance Examinations for Admission

IIT JAM: Indian Institute Of Technology Joint Admissions Test

Step 3: Bachelor’s

Description: After completion of a 10+2 level of education in the subjects of science stream, the students are required to take admissions in relevant bachelor’s level programme. A B.Sc. or B.Tech in the related specialization is required.

Popular bachelor level specializations:

B.Sc.(Bachelor of Science) Bioinformatics Science

B.Sc.(Bachelor of Science) Biochemistry

B.Sc.(Bachelor of Science) Biology

B.Tech.(Bachelor of Technology) Biotechnology

B.Tech.(Bachelor of Technology) Computer Science

B.Tech.(Bachelor of Technology) Bioinformatics

B.Tech.(Bachelor of Technology) Genetic Engineering

Step 4: Post Bachelor’s

Description: Post bachelor’s the candidate can consider either of the options mentioned below.

Option 1: After completion of B.Sc or B.Tech in the related specialization, the candidate can start working in the industry with entry-level roles. He or she can work as a laboratory technician, bioinformatics analyst or junior bioinformatician. After gaining an experience of 1-2 years, he or she can further continue with higher education in the related specialization.

Option 2: After completion of B.Sc or B.Tech in the related specialization with an aggregate of 55 percent of marks or equivalent, the candidate can further continue with master’s level of education without any gap of time in the academics. We have mentioned below the popular master’s level specialization for bioinformatics scientist careers.

Hope this helps!
