Hi aditya!

Admissions to all the IITs is based on JEE advanced exam for which you need to qualify by scoring well in JEE mains.
By good, if you mean the oldest IITs , The cutoff ranks are less than 4000 ( considering top engineering fields)

Previous years cutoffs (branch wise) for every IIT can be found here : https://www.google.com/amp/s/engineering.careers360.com/articles/jee-advanced-cutoff-for-iits/amp

As for the preparation goes:
You need to be good at basic math and science by the time you finish your 10th standard.

While learning through your subjects during your +1/+2 , Learn the fundamentals and slowly you can master the higher level problems. Any IIT focussed Institute will be conducting frequent exams in both JEE main and Advanced Levels. Make sure you solve the papers ( that includes solving the unanswered/ wrongly answered ones after finishing the tests)

Constant revision and practice are key for a good score in JEE mains, and for JEE advanced, you need to solve lot of different problems from different material. Enquire your lectures about what materials to go through for specific topics and just go through them. You will get better over time. Just be conscious on your progress rather than comparing to your friends. I have seen several students improve their problem solving/ understanding over the 2 years time. So give more time to subjects you feel you are little weak and dont be hesitant to take help from fellow students/ lecturers.

Have fun learning and remember it can take sometime to see the results but dont be discouraged by your performances at times, you will always progress if you keep practicing and solving. Goodluck to you :)

PS: Getting an admit from an IIT is an achievement for sure but there are equally good programs in several NITs IIITs and colleges like BITS. So don't be disappointed if don't get one, you always have good alternatives for supporting your bigger goals!
