I don't think that jee mains January exam will hamper your class 12th board exams and in my opinion you should appear for it at least to get an estimate of pattern of questions.
Yes you can appear for jee mains April paper even if you don't appear for the 1st paper.

Your decision has both good and bad sides. In the good side of your decision is that you don't need to spend time on preparing for JEE mains and you can focus on your class 12th but on the other hand is that if you cannot perform better in one exam then you miss the other chance.

Alwar now you know don't need to worry about it since time for applying on paper January is over and and you should focus on your bold and JEE  April attempt.
