As you have mentioned that your rank is 17k. According to the previous years opening and closing ranks of nits it seems that you are eligible to secure seat in metallurgy in all the southern nits. You are also eligible to other branches. I suggest you to find out what you are more interested in and weigh your options carefully before choosing the branch. If you are interested in metallurgy and if you wanna know which nit is best for it in south india I would suggest you to go NIT Tirchy as it has excellent placements and a very strong alumni base

Hello Gnaneshwar, with this rank you should be able to get metallurgy at most of the NIT even if you are from general category being from any other category increases your chances even further. You can try for the top NITs in South India namely Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal and Calicut. All the best.
