JoSAA(Joint Seat Allocation Authority) holds counselling of admission in IITs/NITs/GFTIs etc. every year.

After Declaration of JEE (Advanced) Result, JoSAA starts choice filling for this academic year(Dates on www.josaa.nic.in ). You have to register yourself on the JoSAA portal and fill (select out of all available) the combination of college(IITs in your case) and branch(what subject you want to study at the IIT) in that form.

This is the most important part (for you)of the counselling process,fill the choices in an absurd order and you are screwed.

To get the best possible option ,you have to do this exercise of finding the colleges you can get at your rank with the help of previous year opening and closing ranks for particular branches of respective iits(also available @JoSAA ). Different people have different priorities-i.e. College v/s Branch. In the time till choice filling starts, find out what do you prefer(keeping in mind where you can be alloted a seat,w.r.t. your rank).

I will suggest starting to fill choices from rank X/2. That is, if your rank is 2k,then start filling the options of what you can get at 1k and go down to 3k–4k,more if you want.The choices filled first are more prior to you than the latter ones..

Keep in mind , the choice filling will have options of IITs/NITs/GFTIs. IITs will be alloted by JEE (Advanced) Rank, and other colleges by JEE(Main) Rank.

The next step is waiting for the counselling result .If you have been allocated a seat in any college, deciding float/slide/freeze is the next step

FLOAT: You don’t want this seat,but a better one. In the next round of counselling,JoSAA will try to allocate a different seat(above in preference of your choices filled)but not necessarily allot one. In that case, you will be on the same choice as that of the previous round of counselling.

SLIDE: IT is similar to float, the difference is that JoSAA will allocate a different branch in the same college as of current round.

FREEZE: Both College and Branch are good by you,and you will be alloted a seat in that College for that particular Branch.You will not be send to the next round of counselling.

If you have not been alloted any seat , you’ll be send to the next round of counselling
