PhD can be torturous and also tortuous as research is not easy. But nowadays the Indian labs are well supported by grants and therefore dearth of reagents and consumables is not an issue atleast in institutes and central universities.

Progress of PhD candidate is subject to constant evaluation and a special committee decides once every one or two years, if a candidate is doing good enough to pursue the doctoral studies further.

Officially, no University will accept you without qualifying their entrance examinations - and definitely not the top ones like IIT, ISI, NIT etc. Unofficially, some mid level Universities can allow you to work with their faculty for sometime. If they find you capable, then too you have to sit for the examination, but you are more or less guaranteed a Ph.D. position. However, it is difficult to attain scholarship in such cases.
