I'm pursuing B. Tech in Production and Industrial. Can I give the paper of Mechanical Branch in GATE and be eligible for Mechanical PSUs?

Yes you can.
Both branches have almost similar syllabus.
But to be honest mechanical has really high competition as compared to production.
It would be easy for you to score better rank in production than mechanical.
Also PSUs have vacancies for production branch too.
Thank you

Yes, Anyone can give exam in whichever stream he or she is interested in GATE. So you being from Production and Industrila background can give mechanical branch paper in gate, but you will only get  M.Tech admission in that particular branch in which you have written your gate.

Although if your target is some PSU and other recruitments through GATE then it could be a barrier to give GATE from other stream as opposed to your graduation stream .These companies have some branch specific criteria along with GATE stream paper which you have appeared in. Same goes for some courses in IIT’s & NITs.

So if you are writing gate in mechanical engineering to get a job as mechanical engineer in PSUs then please don't do that.

Hope this clears your doubt.

But there are some PSUs which allow several other disciplines as well under advertised discipline like I found for BHEL in this link https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/bhel-recruitment-through-gate              Can you suggest me some other PSUs which might consider P&I under ME paper?

I am sorry to say that but academic qualification for BHEL recruitment is - Candidates must have passed a full-time Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology or Five year integrated Master’s degree or Dual Degree program in Engineering/Technology in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from a recognized Indian University/ Institute. As you did your BE in P&I you are not eligible.PSUs not only take into consideration your GATE paper but also your branch in BE make sure your branch in eligible.Hope this helps.
