The  rank is calculated based on the assumption that the number of students is 1150000.But it may vary, which alter your rank and chances to get admission in NIT.

If you have scored 96 percentile in your JEE mains, then accordingly your general category rank would lie around 40,000. Well even with 40,000 rank it is certainly possible that you'll just make it barely into some of the nits

If you apply for home state quote i guess u'll certainly qualify for some branches that are less in demand.

However if you really want to bag that nit tag with a good branch, you'll have to rely on the north eastern and new nits like silchar, meghalaya, agartala, sikkim etc as their general cut offs are also way too low.

So it's your decision to go for some better nit with your home state quota or you can opt for North eastern nits or even other government institutions with your desired seat.
