Doctors working in the government sector and aiming to pursue postgraduate medical courses would now get marks weightage that would be added to the overall score in the NEET-PG as the government has done away with the existing system of 30% seats reserved for them in PG courses.

The move comes after the government decided to surrender 50% of seats to all India pool as per the directions of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The new modalities, to be applicable from 2018-19 academic year, would help Telangana students immensely as they would have a chance to gain admission in nearly 8,000 seats across the country, while Telangana colleges have given just 323 seats to the all India pool.

As per the orders issued on Tuesday, 30% of marks would be added to the total score for those who have worked in tribal areas for three years and 24% marks to those who have worked in rural areas. As per the existing practice, 30% of seats are reserved for in-service doctors in clinical subjects and 50% in non-clinical subjects.

However, the candidates should qualify in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-PG exam to be eligible for addition of weightage of marks. Temporary, contract, outsourcing candidates would not be eligible for addition of weightage marks. If candidates have already completed PG degree before joining the government service, they would not be given deputation to do another PG degree. If candidates have done PG diploma course before joining the government service or after joining it, if they are selected for a PG degree, they would be given deputation for 12 months only.
