Gujarat University is a public state university (Public University) which is affiliated to the University Grants Commission of India (UGC India) under the Ministry of Education, India.

Almost 70% of colleges in Ahmedabad are affiliated to Gujarat University who has courses across various disciplines. These colleges are of four types:

1. Government College (lowest fees)
2. Grant-in-aid College (lowest fee and almost comparable to fees of Govt. College)
3. Self-financed College (higher fees - almost 5-10 times or more for some courses)
4. Autonomous College
