their is no harm in selecting NIT branch but if you you wont get them anyways, then i advise you that you should try for it, as you only will be wasting time doing it. Instead you should go on for options of colleges were you can get admissions.

If you won't get them better not to try. If your rank is nearer to the closing rank then you should try if not and your rank is more than high then better to look for good government or private colleges. Apply for counseling. Don't try to make simple works complex. Those things will only harm you i.e. it will disturb you only. Don't do those things which will affect you. Do works in simple way.
