No joining national service scheme nss is not compulsory for assistant professor in Mumbai or any region of india.Since nss is voluntary it can not  be made mandatory. Person who want to serve in nss can join, it offers great value in ones life by teaching them about time management ,discipline, values.
Nss also provide relaxation in some jobs .
