An MDS is not 'necessary' after a BDS, but definitely beneficial.

• BDS is a generalization, MDS a specialization. If you wish to become a specialist in one of the fields, you would have to go for an MD.
• With more and more number of people going for MD, people are more likely to trust a doctor with MDS+BDS, than simply BDS.

BDS doctors too have a good future and scope but the problem in today's life with BDS dentists is that the competition has increased a lot. There are more number of dentists available in every street. So your earning can be limited, so that is the reason why many people choose to do masters so that they can have proficiency in a particular field which many others can't have which will give them their uniqueness and thus he/she will hopefully have good number of patients turning up.
