For procuring a Character Certificate, there are several methods. If you are a student, you can get it from the institution in which you are currently studying. You do not need to go back to the principal of your old school. However, if you insist on doing so, you have to write an application to him/her regarding the same and if he/she does provide it, it will be considered valid.
