JAM is an entrance test for admission to Masters in IITs, NITs, IISERs and IISc (for I.PhD). For life sciences, one can apply to either BL or BT paper. But BL is only applicable to I.PhD in IISc and IISER. But BT is applicable to M.Sc. in biotechnology offered at several IITs as well as for I.PhD in IISc and IISER.

The syllabus for BL is composed of simple maths and broad area of biology. BT syllabus contain biology, physics, chemistry and maths.

For the exam that was conducted on February 2019, syllabus of BT paper can be accessed by visiting the link http://jam.iitkgp.ac.in/?id=p&n=402

For the upcoming year's exam the syllabus will be more or less similar and will be updated on the website of JAM 2020.

Here is the IIT JAM Syllabus for Biotechnology:

General Biology:Taxonomy, Heredity, Genetic Variation, etc.

Biochemistry and Physiology: Carbohydrates, vitamins, organ systems, etc.

Basic Biotechnology: Tissues, antibodies.

Molecular Biology: DNA, RNA , Gene Transfer.

Cell Biology: Cell Cycle.

Microbiology: Bacteria, Fungi, Protozoa.
