No, there is no such compulsion that a candidate has to give Jee Main twice a year. You can appear for one session also. It's true that Jee Main is conducted twice a year, once in January and another one in April. But it depends on the candidates if they will appear for both the sessions or not. A candidate can appear for Jee Main in three consecutive years. For example, if you have passed 12th in 2020, you can appeat for Jee Main 2020, 2021 and 2022. Now Jee Main is conducted twice a year, so the total number of attempts become 6, twice every year. Now you can appear as per your choice among these 6 attempts. JEE MAIN score is valid for one year and if you appear for both the sessions in a year, the best score of both the sessions will be considered as the final result and for admission. As per the latest guidelines you can jee mains two times a year, and the best of the two marks will be considered for your rank and further counselling.

That means it is not compulsory for you to give both the exams you can give either of them.
