He has two options too choose from in 11 standard as you are suggesting. One is he can opt for commerce with maths, he gets to study economics also. Or if his preference his slightly inclined towards he can choose non medical with maths.

But I would suggest that he must select a subject he wants to give boards in or want to pursue further after 12 standard.

If he is optional is maths he can opt for anything as basically all degrees require maths so there are loads of options. Whereas economics for a degree has less options. So choose wisely keeping in mind your future goal.
