Your question is not clear however for the rank part it can be understood as, suppose there are 100 students given some exam with total 300 makrs.

Students have obtained marks from 150 to 250. Then the rank will be as follows:-

• 250 - 1
• 249 - 2
• 150 - 100

However some time students will score equal marks then the tie breaker will be used like for three subjects one subject will be used as tie breaker. Even then if the tie is not resolved then the second subject will be checked. If that does not help then the equal rank will be allotted. Sometimes randomly rank is given by some computer algorithms.
