By different categories in VIT means the fees you have to pay irrespective of your rank. You can understand by going below:

Fees of the respective rank:

1-20k category 1 fees-usual

20-50K category 2 fees-high(Around 50k-1lac extra fees per year)

50-75K category 3 fees-higher(Around 1.5lac extra fees per year)

75-99.9K category 4 fees-highest(Around 2.5lac extra fees per year)

Hello dear

Here they meant to say that categories are the domain of  fetched rank in the VIT entrance exam. In the category wise they will divide the rank from 1k to 99k as well the counselling slots for the various categories are different as well. So depending upon the rank only they will go allot the respective slot for you.
