Prep rank or preparatory rank does not mean that you have qualified JEE Advanced. But the prep rank is useful for admitting students to IITs when there is vacancy of seats. When vacany is found in institutes the students are admitted to preparatory course for a duration of one year. After completion of this one year they are admitted to first year of undergraduate course the next year.
