In cardiac care, you must work under the supervision of doctors and are not allowed to make your own decisions, whereas as a perfusionist, you are in charge and can do whatever you want. You can choose which medicines to deliver, how much volume to prime, what type of cardioplegia to prepare, and what methods to employ to improve the post-operative outcome, for example. The surgeon, perfusionist, and anaesthetist are the three key pillars in cardiac surgery; they must coordinate as a team to work together, but it will entirely depend on your interests.
