Genetics happens to be branch of biology dealing with the study of genes, genetic variation and heredity in organisms. A proponent of Mendel's findings and works, William Bateson coined the term genetics in 1905.

Coined by Wilhelm Johannes, a gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes are made up of DNA and every person has two copies of each gene, one inherited from each parent. Genes carry the information that determines one's traits, which are features or characteristics that are passed on or inherited from one's parents.

Some of the characteristics of genes are as follows:

1. Genes are functional units of heredity, variation, mutation and evolution and thereby determine the physical as well as the physiological characteristics of organisms.
2. Genes are situated in chromosomes and each gene occupies a fixed position named locus.
3. Genes express themselves by synthesis of proteins and enzymes, controlling cell metabolism.
4. By the process of replication, genes can produce a duplicate copy of themselves.
5. Genes may show a sudden change in expression from one form to another due to a change in composition called mutation.
