Should I drop one year after graduation to prepare for exams like JAM, JNU-CEEB, BHU, etc.? Is there any loss because of dropping one year?

Nazneen Tabish 12th Jan, 2019

Hi Sakshi,Dropp Dropping for any competitive exam is Good only when you are sure that you would clear the exams next year with a good rank.Actually, Dropping for one year gives you the perspective to attain knowledge in a very explanatory way as you understand each and every topic with time. But Dropping is not always good as it may lead to pressure form the family, taunts, everyday tantrums.I will only suggest you to drop if you are damn sure about your success otherwise it is not worth to waste one year over a thing you are not sure about.

I want to pass GATE Exam by scoring at least 60% of marks, so please tell me for score better idea of preparation within 2-3 months.

Azim Shaikh 2nd Dec, 2018
Since you have limited time, you have to make some strategies. Here you will apply rule of vital few. That means you will focus on only important things and You will make sure that your preparation is effective.

First look at the distribution of marks. In GATE question paper there are 65 questions carrying 100 marks.

15 marks are for mathematics

15 marks are for general aptitude (GA)

70 marks are for subject of the paper e.g. mechanical, electronics and so on.

Strategy for Mathematics

Mathematics forms the foundation for engineering. I will recommend you to start your preparation with mathematics. In fact, it will also help you to solve some of the other problems which belong to general aptitude and core subject.

You will select important topics or chapters from this subject. How will you do that? Look at earlier questions papers. Made Easy publishes earlier year question papers with answers categorized in to different chapters. They also specify for how many marks each chapter was allocated for different years. Since weightage is not equal, you will focus on important things. Due to limited time, you will focus on your strengths. The topics which you understand better and have high weightage. You will not spend time something that you do not understand.

You will not spend more than 15 days on mathematics. Learn by doing. Solve as many problems as you can. Prepare chapter, solve unsolved questions. Look at GATE questions on similar topic. Clear concepts, solve problems and repeat.

Strategy for GA

Lets look at the syllabus.

Verbal Ability:English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, erratically reasoning and verbal deduction.

Numerical Ability:numerical computation, numerical estimation, numerical reasoning and data interpretation.

Looking at the syllabus, what do you think? Do you expect this to learn within 10 days. The answer isNO

Preparation for GA is literally not required. These skills about English and numerical computation are developed over a period of time. These are all common sense questions. What you can do is go quickly through earlier year questions of GA. See can you attempt them without preparation. These are easy questions. If you do not know the answer , use elimination based approach i.e. eliminate each clearly wrong answer, then what remains is the right answer.

You will not spend more than 1 or 2 days on Preparing GA section.

Preparation for Core Subject

Here again you find out the important subjects. Focus your preparation on those topics. Out of 90 days around 55 days you will devote for preparing core subjects.Strategy will be same as explained in preparation for Mathematics.

General Tips

Determination:
Aim for All India Rank 1. Dream big.

Plan:
A plan without work and a work without plan , there is a failure. You must plan your studies. The plan could be monthly, weekly and daily. Understand how much syllabus you need to cover and how much time you have. Allocate the time properly. Plan should not be rigid, it must evolve as you go on preparing.

Execution:
Go step by step, conquer every concept, every para, every chapter and every subject. You must work hard on your plan. GATE is easy , if you work hard you will definitely get a good rank.

Practice:
There is a saying "Practice makes man perfect and women too :)". So you must spend enough time in mastering concepts. Remember that the amount of time you spent on preparation will be directly proportional to your success in GATE.

Test Series: You must solve previous year question papers. Over the years nature of questions remains same. Solve chapter-wise questions. Solving test will help you in understanding your strengths and weaknesses. Join test series of some reputed coaching institute. Devote last ten days only for solving questions papers.

Concept Clarity:
You may recite the formulas but anything you try to remember without understanding , will not be remembered for long. So first you must emphasize on clearing the concepts and then try to remember. make list of formulas for different chapters.

Technical Discussin with Friends:
Help your friends in solving the problems. If you yourself do not understand ask for help.

Books:Use appropriate books

Thanks,
Azim
