I want my carrier as a scientist in genetic engineering... What should I opt as my subject and what should I do after my +2 in science (bio)

Saba 21st Apr, 2019

Hi Sritam.

If you have set your aim at becoming a Research Scientist in genetics (Geneticist), then I would suggest you to go fro a B. Sc. in either general science or life sciences.

Once you've completed you Bachelor's, you can apply for a Master's in Genetics (advisable), Molecular biology (advisable) or Genetic engineering. Go for reputed institutes that offer good research exposure. In between your vacations, apply and undergo internships that'll add value and hone your technical skills.

After getting done with Master's, you can apply for scholarships for PhD in India as well as abroad and perhaps, start a career in genetics and genetic engineering.

A career in genetics or any branch of science requires utmost patience and consistency. Though a Master's can do for many positions, a doctorate degree is desirable for many senior positions in research organizations and universities for a career in research as well as academics.

Hope this helps. Feel free to get in touch with us for any query.

All the best.

Is b.tech genetic engineering is better or b.tech biotechnology is better

Abhay Agnihotri 4th Apr, 2019

Biotech:

Branch of science in ehich raw materials are transformed into amazing innovation, discovery and products by using biology and technology. Biotech is a broad branch which include many fields like genetic engineering , bioprocess engineering etc. Some big MNCs hire students for their life science domains, you can get good opportunities. Comparatively, it has somewhat wider scope than genetic engineering.

Genetic:

It is the manipulation of organism's genes for advancing healthcare , medicines, etc. It is subset of biotech engineering. Genetic engineering is completely research oriented field, a Ph.D degree is imperative if you want to climb ladder at work. It is still in development stage in India though it has gained much importance in last few years. But other developed countries genetic engineering is doing really well. USA and UK are at the forefront in research.

Now your question depends whether you want to go for research or enter the industry. There's nothing like better thing. If you enjoy it, you will surely make your way.

Career options and resonsibilites of Genetic engeneering ?

K P Naveen Reddy 1st Apr, 2019

Hello Hari

Genetic Engineering is also known as genetic modification. It is a process adding new DNAthe living organisms using artificial methods. It is a method of physically removing a gene from an organism and inserting it to another and giving it the ability to express the qualities given by that gene.

Genetic engineering is a specialization of biotechnology. There are many undergraduate and postgraduate courses available in this field.

Bachelor Courses:

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Genetic Engineering
  • Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Genetic Engineering
  • B.Sc in Genetic Engineering

Master Courses:

  • Master of Engineering in Genetic Engineering
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Genetic Engineering
  • M.Sc in Genetic Engineering

Career options after completion of course:

  • You can work in medical and pharmaceutical industries, research and development departments, agricultural sector, genetic engineering firms, chemical companies, etc after pursuing courses in genetic engineering, A genetic engineer can work in both private and public sectors.
  • The graduates of Genetic engineering are required in government as well as private organizations.
  • There is a huge growth of genetic engineering in India as well as abroad. With the increasing number of biotech firms in India, the future scope for genetic engineers is good.
  • The graduates of this field can also take teaching as a career in which Numerous colleges are introducing genetic engineering course in their colleges they are hiring professionals for this field.
  • If you wish to become a genetic engineering research scientist, you need a doctoral degree in biological science. The genetic engineering research scientist is responsible for entire research programs.

Responsibilities of a genetic engineer:

  • For future prospects, the genetic engineer should aware of every topic in the subject.
  • The study and research work and proper care were taken by the engineer.
  •  Genetic engineers needed to maintain huge contracts with various firms and industries.
  •  work timing can be extended in case of special projects.

I hope the above information will help. Good luck!

Thank you!

I have a confusion of B.tech Genetic engineering really a course??

fayaz Student Expert 25th Mar, 2019

yes Sakthi, genetic engineering is a course.

Genetic Engineering is the branch of advanced science, which is concerned with the wide range of scientific techniques that are applied in order to purposely change the genetic structure in the DNA code of a living life form so as to create newer and better beings.

Students enrolled to the course are taught advanced and efficient ways to develop organisms better suited to meet environmental challenges and the needs of modern medicine. A few examples of genetically engineered organisms currently in the market include plants with resistance to some insects, plants that can tolerate herbicides, and crops with modified oil content. Some of the major national- level entrance examinations conducted in India for admission to the course are JEE MAIN, JEE ADVANCE, SRMJEEE, VIT EEE, BIT-SAT, JNU EEE, etc. Other universities- level entrance exams are conducted by SRM University, Vellore Institute of Technology, Birla Institute of Technology and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

i am really confused between biotechnology , biomedical engineering , bioengieering , biotechnological engineering and genetic engineering?

Hrishikesh Das 22nd Mar, 2019

All the subjects that you have mentioned have two things in basic-Biology and Maths. At an bachelors level, you will be taught the same things in all the streams you mentioned with some in depth knowledge in some given sphere like in genetic engineering- nanotechnology, gene editing will be covered more vastly , wheareas in biomedical engineering the way instruments like CT, MRi are designed will be taught, a macro approach.

Now depending on the college they might offer some , some not. So you can choose at that level. Other parameters like job offers may be taken into consideration.

Can we get admission in srm genetic engineering or biotechnology...if we will get less marks in exams??

Anandhu J 26th Apr, 2019

Hai Khushi,

SRM university is considered as one of the top colleges that provide course in genetic engineering. The selection occurs by SRMJEE.

So you have to attend SRMJEE and weightage is given in order entrance, eligibility. A merit list is made and one who comes first on the list the more priority. So selection depends on your marks and how others stand.
