Psychology is one of the optional subjects offered by the UPSC for the civil services mains examination.
If you have studied this particular subject in detail or in a way that is very similar to the syllabus given for this psychology subject, you could definitely take it as your optional subject. Check and go through the syllabus given at the official website of UPSC and study for all the common things and articles that you have had already studied during your BA degree.
The tricky thing about psychology is that it is considered to be a natural science, a social science and also a life science subject. So, you need to be very specific and profile towards the way you study it. Some tips for you are -
Stick to a minimum number of books for this optional which covers about 95% of the syllabus. Do not try to read ten different books and get overwhelmed.
Some answers in this optional can be written using your intuition also.
NCERTs are very important for this subject, especially if you are learning psychology for the first time.

For starting the UPSC preparations from the college you have to start from today it's doesn't matter that in which year you have now if you are in 1st and 2nd year then this is the golden chance to start your preparation for UPSC during this time you can give 2-3 hours consistently till the last then you will get success in the UPSC and if you are in 3rd and 4th year then you have to donate some more hours to your preparations.

First of all, eligibility for UPSC is passed Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from a recognized university, you can apply even in the final year, there is no specific aggregate required here, you need to attain 21 years,
Coming to the exam, it consists of three levels namely; Preliminary, Mains and Interview.
Preliminary consists of two papers of 200 marks, it's MCQs based, its numbers aren't added in the list.
First paper is General Studies Paper I with topic such as History of India and Indian national movement, Indian and World geography, Economic and social development- sustainable development, poverty,inclusion demographics, social sector initiatives etc,Indian polity and governance-constitution,political system,Current Events nationally and Internationally, General Science,General Issues on environmental ecology,biodiversity and climate change.
Second paper is CSAT which is qualifying by nature where you need to score 33% which is 66 marks only out of 200 and this includes topics such as basic numeracy, comprehension, logical reasoning and analytical ability, general mental ability, decision making and problem solving, interpersonal skills including communication skills.
Coming to Mains it's more of a subjective type, you have to write answer for Four General Studies Paper such as
GS-I includes Indian Heritage and Culture,History and Geography of the World and Society,
GS-II includes Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations,
GS-III includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management,
GS-IV includes Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude

So, there are total nine papers here. 250 marks for each paper, total marks in Mains is 1750 marks followed by Personality Test which consists of 275 marks.
