can BA psychology graduate Will be able to tackle with the upsc cse optional paper of Psychology ?

gauravvijayvargiya399 14th Sep, 2020

Hello Aspirant,

Psychology is one of the optional subjects offered by the UPSC for the civil services mains examination.

If you have studied this particular subject in detail or in a way that is very similar to the syllabus given for this psychology subject, you could definitely take it as your optional subject. Check and go through the syllabus given at the official website of UPSC and study for all the common things and articles that you have had already studied during your BA degree.

The tricky thing about psychology is that it is considered to be a natural science, a social science and also a life science subject. So, you need to be very specific and profile towards the way you study it. Some tips for you are -

Stick to a minimum number of books for this optional which covers about 95% of the syllabus. Do not try to read ten different books and get overwhelmed.

Some answers in this optional can be written using your intuition also.

NCERTs are very important for this subject, especially if you are learning psychology for the first time.

pdwords Student Expert 13th Sep, 2020
Hello,

For appearing in UPSC Exam, candidates need to pass Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from a recognized university and attain 21 years age, one is eligible to apply even in the final year, now BA LLB is a really good option as a career or even for pursuing exam like UPSC your integrated courses will teach you more in depth understanding of humanities subject which you already have a strong foundation for if you belong to humanities stream at 10+2 level, UPSC as exam is more humanities oriented so being a law graduate will help you a lot and yes, you can also have law as an optional subject, as you must know that UPSC syllabus is humongous and the syllabus for optional is nothing short of graduation level,hence law as an optional subject is scoring one as well.

Hi Sinhashreya,

For starting the UPSC preparations from the college you have to start from today it's doesn't matter that in which year you have now if you are in 1st and 2nd year then this is the golden chance to start your preparation for UPSC during this time you can give 2-3 hours consistently till the last then you will get success in the UPSC and if you are in 3rd and 4th year then you have to donate some more hours to your preparations.

Aditi amrendra Student Expert 14th Sep, 2020
Hello,

First complete NCERTs of class 11 and 12 and make notes out of it.Remember, never skip NCERT.
Then for paper 1, there are two books that most toppers suggest one is Robert baron and the other is Saundra k Cicarelli. You can pick anyone of them. If you are a slow reader then go for Cicarelli.
Now for Paper 2 you can go for Smark Swain.
All the books are available on Amazon.
Other than that, watch Paul bloom videos on YouTube, Crash course psychology series video.
Follow Psychology today website and join Telegram channel name Psychology Optional for UPSC CSE.
If you want notes then you can buy Mukul Pathak notes.There are many toppers who have uploaded their notes and answer copies, one is Anurag jain and you can follow is blog.

Best booklist for upsc ias exam ?

pdwords Student Expert 12th Sep, 2020
Hello,

When it comes to preparation regarding UPSC, start  with NCERTs first as this will build your foundation strong, and then onwards move towards other standard books.

For Prelims, refer the following books:

History ;

  • NCERT Class XI and XII
  • India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra
  • For Indian Culture, refer art and culture by Nitin Singhania

Geography ;

  • NCERT Class VI to XII
  • GC Leong's Physical Geography
  • World Atlas

Economics ;

  • NCERT Class XI
  • Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh

International Relations & Polity ;

  • NCERT XII Political Science with current affairs
  • Indian Polity by Laxmikanth

CSAT ;

  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Agarwal
  • M Tyra's Quicker Maths

You can refer the following books regarding  four General Studies Paper for Mains Exam

GS I - For History , Class XI NCERT book with India's struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra,India after Independence by Bipan Chandra,History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra

For Geography refer World Geography and Geography of India by Majid Hussain, GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography with NCERT Class XI book.

GS II - Polity and International Relations , refer Indian Polity by Lamikanth,India's Foreign Policy by Rajiv Sikri

GS III - For Economics refer Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, read ARC report along with Economic Survey and Fiscal Budget.

GS IV - For Ethics refer a book named Lexicon by Niraj Kumar, also you can go through study material of IGNOU.

Always remember to keep your resources minimal, read one book many a times instead of many a book one time, revision is the key here, it'll take a lot of time to get acquainted with these, for instance Polity by Laxmikanth is one such that has to be time and again, at first it might be even difficult to grasp concepts or remember such volume of knowledge, but as I said keep revision it, you may read the chapters in weekdays and in weekends you may solve model papers. Doing this will also give you an idea how effectively you're being able to express the knowledge in the paper.
