I am thinking that first of all I will do mbbs and Then I will go for upsc cse exam.I am taking right step or not?

Akram Khan 7th Oct, 2020

Hi,

Yes,  you can give upsc civil services exam. The basic educational eligibility to appear for upsc cse is that a candidate should possess a bachelors degree from a recognized institution. It could be from any stream.

So if you want to go for M.B.B.S for your bachelors you can do that. There is nothing wrong in it.

Infact if you do  MBBS  and after that apply for upsc you will be on safer side. As upsc is a tough exam and competition is very high even if you can't crack  it you will have the other noble career options of your choice.

Hope it helps.

should i take phylosophy hons. in ba ...as i want to take it as optional in upsc ..and is it worth of studying .

pdwords Student Expert 28th Aug, 2020
Hello,

The eligibility of UPSC is passed graduation in any discipline from a recognized University, there is no minimum aggregate required for this, you can apply even in the final year and you need to be 21 years old.

Now, coming to your question, in UPSC there is optional paper for Philosophy, so in this regard it'll help you a lot, as the syllabus of optional is nothing short of graduation studies, also many toppers have taken this as optional and have qualified successfully, so there is no shortage of study materials as well, but the most important thing is if you like philosophy as a subject or not, if you don't you'll find it difficult to deal with academically or even during preparation of UPSC, as the case is UPSC doesn't discriminate among aspirants, hence people from all backgrounds are allowed to appear for the exam, and this is the sole reason there's no restriction in terms of any particular stream, eventually it's your planning, preparation, dedication and focus that makes one successful as evident from toppers of years who come from different backgrounds such as Engineering, Medical, CA etc.

What are the expectations of UPSc ?

nishant sharma 27th Aug, 2020

Hello student ,

If we talk in common language then people take UPSC as UPSC- CSE exam but in truth UPSC conducts many more exams like NDA (National Defence Academy), IES (Indian Engineering Services), IFS (Indian Forest Services), etc.

For instance will talk only about CSE ( Civil services examination), commonly called as IAS. Before preparing for CSE you should be aware that not everybody who cracks it, gets into IAS, IPS or IFS which most of you aspire for.

Hope it will help you !

You can go through the following steps in order to start your preparation;

The first and most important step towards preparation is to be well acquainted with UPSC Syllabus , learn it by heart, that's the most crucial step to crack this exam, to know what to read and what to skip.

In addition to this, don't segregate your preparation between prelims and mains, because nowadays what's happening is even in prelims, UPSC frame questions based on Mains syllabus, So,

Make a timetable,set targets on a daily,weekly and monthly basis,that's the only way to complete this extensive syllabus.

Newspaper reading is very vital, you can start with  The Hindu, or Indian Express on a regular basis to be updated as well as gaining knowledge which shall be highly useful to you in future exam preparation part with a more emphasis on editorial part, it will not only broaden your perspective but help a lot in answer writing,and make sure whatever opinion you form it should be well balanced. You can also make notes of this, it'll be very useful in answer writing.

When it comes to reading books ,start with basics, for each subject, you can do with NCERTs for this. This will build your foundation strong,as you progress, move on to other relevant books as mentioned below;

For Prelims, refer the following books:

History ;

NCERT Class XI and XII
India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra
For Indian Culture, refer art and culture by Nitin Singhania

Geography ;

NCERT Class VI to XII
GC Leong's Physical Geography
World Atlas

Economics ;

NCERT Class XI
Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh

International Relations & Polity ;

NCERT XII Political Science with current affairs
Indian Polity by Laxmikanth

CSAT ;

Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Agarwal
M Tyra's Quicker Maths

Coming to Mains Exam, you can refer the following books for four General Studies Paper;

GS I - For History , Class XI NCERT book with India's struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra,India after Independence by Bipan Chandra,History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra

For Geography refer World Geography and Geography of India by Majid Hussain, GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography with NCERT Class XI book.

For GS II - Polity and International Relations , refer Indian Polity by Lamikanth,India's Foreign Policy by Rajiv Sikri

For GS III - For Economics refer Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, read ARC report along with Economic Survey and Fiscal Budget.

For GS IV - For Ethics refer a book named Lexicon by Niraj Kumar, also you can go through study material of IGNOU.

Always keep resources minimal always, read one book many a times instead of many a book one time, revision is the key here.

Writing mains is a huge task, for nine paper it requires immense practice along with knowledge. So, practicing answer writing in advance, even in a little way helps a lot in the long run.There are many sites which provide questions on daily basis you can avail that. Try to give a holistic viewpoint while answer writing by providing political,economical and social aspect. You can also go through toppers answer sheet in order to understand how to present your answer and fetch more marks, there are sites which have uploaded these answer sheets and it'll prove to be very useful to you. And, it helps if you can connect answer answer with current scenarios if it has any prevalence, and to showcase its political, social, geographical way, especially to present it in broad perspective so to speak.

Going through previous year question paper is highly recommended which you can get from the site of UPSC,and in order to evaluate your performance, do go through mock papers and test series on a regular basis.
