Apart from the recruitment through GATE, PSUs do conduct their own entrance exams and interviews also. You will have to search the internet for more details. Also leading newspapers carry the ads but best to keep checking the career sections of PSUs and apply.

Yes, there are certain PSUs such as NHPC, BEL, BHEL, GAIL which do not conduct their own entrance exams but hire candidates based upon their GATE performance, so clearing the GATE exam is the compulsory criterion for these units.
