The exam pattern of every law school is different and yes there is a bit of rote learning  involved in law as you will have to memorise the relevant sections of the act and also case laws pertaining to that subject but, the paper in Criminal Law, Tax Law, CPC etc is also fact based sometimes, which means that mere rote learning wont help you in answering these questions you will have to understand the concept throughly and only then you can answer such questions.
