Dating back to the early 19 century and 18th century, the plight of Indian women was quite miserable and they were totally dependent on their male counterparts for each and every thing, even such as the basic amenities for life.

Several cultural and religious practices such as Sati Pratha, women married at childhood, lack of education for women, where followed and practice within the nation which eventually took ages for or women and the society to find the overcome it.

In short, it was one of of those times where uh women had only the freedom to remain confined within their homes.
