What are the scope of agriculture engineering in India? Is it worth to study?

After completion of BE/B.Tech one can pursue M.Techin Agriculturewhich includes study like crop processengineering, firm machinery and power, soil and water conservation etc. A Ph.D. degree of three years is also offered at IIT kharagpur, andIndian AgriculturalResearch Institute (IARI), New Delhi.

It is safe to say that number ofGovernment jobposts are available for Graduates. B.E./B.Tech. graduates may join Agriculture Departments of different State Governments. They may easily land Officer post in this department. Apart from that, other Government Departments where graduates may find jobs are- Food Departments etc. When it comes toPrivate sector, Fertilizer firms, Research and development firms, Agriculture Machinery manufacturing firm and Manufacturing firms etc are the prime recruiters. Average starting salary is between 2.5- 4.5 Lakh Rupees per year.

Agricultural Engineering is the branch of applied science where engineering skillsand technology is used to reduce the drudgery, and increase the outcome inagriculture. It helps to make agriculture sustainable, profitable andcompetitive enterprise through engineering interventions of farm mechanization,value addition and energy management in production and post harvest operations.

In acountry like India where almost 70 % population is dependent on agriculture,it's very easy to get a job in this field. After completing the courseof Agricultural Engineering, you can opt from below mentionedopportunities available.

  • Private jobs : There are lots of opportunities in private industries which are working in Agriculture sector e.g.Tractor companies, Irrigation companies, fertiliser and seed companies, Dairy firms etc., as a sales executive as well as research department. Initially, they offer a salary of Rs.15000-30000 for sales executive and Rs.25000-50000 for R&D. These are several consultancies which offer a recruitment in these companies through them, such as krishicareer .
  • Government jobs : As mentioned above , every state has a agriculture department and they have mandate of Processing, Mechanisation in farm, for which they recruit Agriculture Engineers in district or Tahsil level. For which every state has its own examinations. Information for the same can be collected from krishicareer .
  • Research : After completing post graduation among any of the subcategories mentioned above, one can appear for exam of ARS conducted by ASRB, to become a Scientist. Which is most respectful and paying job in agriculture sector. With the passion of research, one can also opt out to work under various projects as a Research fellow on temporary basis.   • Teaching : One can also join as Assistant Professor at colleges and universities, after qualifying NET, which is conducted by ASRB. The NET is available in all those 4 sub-disciplines mentioned above, for which post graduation (M.Tech./M.Sc.) in respective sub-disciplines is a basic qualification. An Assistant Professor can earn upto Rs.50000 month.
  • UPSC : Although UPSC don't conduct any separate examination to recruit Agricultural Engineers, but a student of B.Tech. is eligible for civil services exam including Indian Forest Services. There is an optional subject of Agril Engineering in IFS exam, which is beneficial for B.Tech. Agril Engg. students.
  • Banking : Now a days banking is a booming sector. With every village , city requires a bank and bank requires an Agricultural Field officers. To recruit these officers, IBPS conducts a common exam annually, which gives a good opportunity for Agricultural Engineering students. Salary of these officers goes somewhere Rs.30000-35000.
  • Subject Matter Specialist : ICAR has a vast network of KVKs, in which the experts of different subjects are requires. With presence in almost every district, these KVKs recruits these SMSs for the extension of technologies developed by government institutions ,to the farmers. The salary and status for this job is similar to that of Assistant Professor.
  • Technical Officer: To assist the Scientists and researchers , ICAR appoints the staff of technical officers. Which is a permanent post and get the salary upto Rs.30000 per month.
