Hello,

Biodiversity Hotspot are extremely rich in species, have high endemism and are under constant threat.. The term "Hotspot" was given by Mayers. There are around 25 Hotspots Worldwide out of which 2 are in India.

India is considered as a mega biodiversity hotspot as 2 of the major hotspots are here and they are -

  1. Indo-Burma Region Hotspot (Eastern Himalayas)
  2. Western Ghat in Sri Lanka

Indo-Burma Region Hotspot -

  • It is one of the most threatened hotspot due to rate of of resource exploitation and habitat loss.
  • Here 56 areas are protected areas. In these areas, there are more endangered species than in other areas of India
  • Example - Pine, Wild Bear, Leopard, Musk Deer.

Western Ghat Hotspot -

  • The entire extent of hotspot was originally about 182000 sq. km. but due to tremendous population, now only 12455 sq. km. or 68% is in pristine condition.
  • The important population here includes asian elephant, Indian Tiger, and the endangered Lion-tailed macaque

Hope this was helpful.
