Introduction to Biomedical Imaging

The course gives in-depth knowledge regarding biomedical imaging technologies and the information they give to medical professionals. The candidates will understand how these technologies are complementing each other. This course is taught by faculty at the University of Queensland and offered by edx.

These days imaging technologies are forming an important component of all developed economies' health budgets, the need for these advanced imaging technologies such as CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays during people’s lives is increasing. The course Introduction to Biomedical Imaging provides a basic understanding of modern imaging modalities and biomedical imaging. The course is self-paced for both the Audit and Verified Track chosen by the candidates. The basic difference between these 2 modes is that during the Audit mode, the candidates will get limited period access whereas in the Verified mode, the access is unlimited.

 It also talks about the basic scientific principles under each modality; and their key applications from cancers to neurological diseases. This course covers both general topics which are designed specifically for the general public and also covers advanced topics that would help the development of professionals in engineering, IT, and health industries.   

Through this course, the candidates will also learn the clinical applications and technology, and hardware used in computerised tomography, X-rays, PET and SPECT, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. The candidates will have to take up quizzes which will help them learn the key points.

Fundamentals of Biomedical Imaging: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

The Certification course on Fundamentals of Biomedical Imaging: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Online Course is taught by Rolf Gruetter, Professor, EPFL. This physics course introduces the Vivo bio-imaging modalities and the candidate learns about the physical principles of major in the same, focusing on the magnetic resonance imaging, popularly called an MRI.

In the initial part of Fundamentals of Biomedical Imaging, professors diligently describe the dynamic of spins as well explained through a magnetic field. This explanation leads to significant notions of magnetic resonance (MR), relaxation, and excitation. Further in this stage, the basic mechanisms of functional MRI, image reconstruction and MR spectroscopy will be discussed.

The next stage of Fundamentals of Biomedical Imaging: Training establishes an important link to life sciences. This is shown by theoretical and practical examples which exemplify how physics contributes towards life sciences and by learning how the prevailing physical principles surpass bio-imaging. Further, the student will learn the practicality of respective imaging modalities, their premise, use, limitations, and biological safety. EdX offers two varied tracks to pursue the self-paced programme; verified and free audit. In the verified mode, the students will be provided with unlimited access to the course and a certificate. In the free mode, the candidates will be allowed to audit the course for a limited duration.
