You can start preparing for GRE from any time that you are comfortable as GRE scores are valid for five years from the year that you have given the examination. Hence the earlier you start preparing the more are your chances of your scoring better. Also participate in co-curriculars as they will also improve your chances. Hope this helps.

And Last but not the least is The Analytical Writing Section

In this part the applicant is given a topic or a so called issue and he/she has to write an        analysis of the topic for which 30 minutes are given. And then another analysis is done of      an argument which will also be timed and will be of 30 minutes.

GRE Syllabus for the Subject test:

The Subject Test of GRE is used to measure the knowledge of the student in a particular subject which can be, :

         1. Biology

         2. Chemistry

         3. Literature

         4. Mathematics

         6. Psychology

The applicant is supposed to have a mojor in one of these 6 subjects and the score achieved from this test is directly considered by the colleges that you are applying for. Along with this, your undergraduate records, recommendation letters, intenrships and projects are also considered and play a major role. The test can be taken worldwide 3 times a year i.e. The Months of April, September, and October.

Now, as you can see, their is a considerable difference between these two papers. So I hope your doubt about the exam is cleared.
