I am studying EEE in an ordinary engeneering college (1st year). but i want to do MSc and PhD in physics from mit Or stanford University. what should I do from now onwards to get an admission mit Or stanford

Trisha Bhattacharyya 22nd Aug, 2020

Hello!

After completion of you B.Tech degree, there are a number of competitive exams that you can sit for- some will help you land good colleges in India such as IITs and NITs, (if you are interested at all, then the go-to exam for you would be GATE) and other exams that help you to get into colleges abroad (such as GRE, TOEFL, IELTS) etc.

To get into Ivy League colleges or any other colleges abroad, you need to prepare for competitive exams such as GRE and TOEFL.

  • For instance, you can give GRE about 8 times a year, after a minimum of every 21 days. It requires basic knowledge on general aptitude, English Language and verbal reasoning skills. No matter whichever college you are from, you performance in this exam will determine your chances at getting into MIT or Stanford University for pursuing a higher degree.
  • A good GRE score range would be something above 310 out of 340. Getting above 330 gets you in the top colleges abroad and a fair chance at obtaining a scholarship.
  • You can start preparing for these exams at any point in your 4 year UG program. Since the test results are valid for 5 years (for GRE) and 2 years (for TOEFL) after you take the test.
  • The maximum duration for preparation varies from 2 months to 6 months depending on your knowledge in English language. You can join certain institutes that coach you for the same, or you can buy books online and study on your own. If you feel that you will be able to make it on your own, then trust your instincts and go for it.

However, what should be kept in mind is that a good test score isn't going to be enough. Since the competition is tough, Universities also prioritize your CV, your SOP and look into the internships that you have done so far and your research papers that were published. You also need to sit for interviews prior to your selection. So prepare accordingly.

Hope you found this article useful. Feel free to ask any other queries.
Good Luck!
