Yes, It is indeed a preparatory course for those who cant sustain otherwise.

One year preparatory course for SC/ST/PD candidates is offered to improve their intake in the B.Tech and Dual Degree programme.

At present most IIT’s have atleast 10–20% drop in students from the above category after first year as they are expelled for poor performance.

To cut expulsion of those students and help them to continue and finish their education, the preparatory courses were started.
