Lateral entry in engineering colleges means direct entry into second year of engineering. For lateral entry a student must have completed 3 years diploma course after class 10th. Such students can then skip the first year of engineering and can directly join in the second year. Though diploma engineering gives an early exposure to the job but one doesn't get to rise enough due to lack of a degree.  But not all colleges take admission through lateral entry.
