The first non-synchronous census was conducted in 1872 by Lord Mayo. Census has been Undertaker every ten years, and the first regular census was conducted in 1881. After independence, it has been conducted by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The last census was conducted in 2011, which was the 15th Census of India.
