Vit vellore would be great choice over Aligarh muslim university. It has excellent infrastructure, faculty, labs, placements, sports facilities, a lot of diversity in students and a lot more. You will get to learn a lot in VIT vellore. So my suggestion is that you should go for VIT vellore.

Hello there, I hope you are doing great, PhD in maths is quite a big deal u know and if u are applying for it that makes me really happy.

About your question both the institution offer good scope for PhD at the end it's all gonna be your efforts ur mentors will just brush up or guide uh. So yes u can try in any of the 2. What ever you are comfortable with. May be by distance or fees etc.. I've gone through the reviews of both places they are good enough. Though vit offers a much better placement than Aligarh
