Hi, I want to pursue a phd in biotechnology, I have a MBA in IB and Undergraduate with BSc (hons) Biotechnology. kindly guide me on how to move ahead. Regards,

Poppins 9th May, 2025

I'm from India and I've completed BSc biotechnology (2019- 2022) and after that I did MBA (2022-24). Currently I'm thinking to do Msc Biotechnology. Will I be able to get fully funded PhD in US or Europe (for Biotechnology) if I do well in my MSc (publish research paper, internship) etc?? How will I justify gap from 2022-24 in which I did MBA? Will it affect my chances? I'm so so confused.  I choose MBA after BSc because of Covid. Job market was so uncertain and MSc without PhD is useless in India (My Country) and I didn't want to get unemployed so I choose MBA but now i regret my decision and want to go back to MSc  I'm so hopeless don't know what to do now

can i do integrated phd course...after doing bsc

Namrata Priyadarshini 7th Apr, 2021

Hello,

Yes, you can pursue an Integrated Ph.D. after doing a BSc. There is a difference between a regular Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. If you want to do a regular Ph.D., the minimum qualification required for this course is an MSc degree. Without that, you can’t apply for it. The course duration is a minimum three years and maximum 5 years. While the candidates can apply for an Integrated Ph.D. right after completing their graduation and the duration of this course is 5 years.

The regular Ph.D. course is more time-consuming as the candidate needs to appear in two exams, one for Msc or masters and one for Ph.D. while the Integrated Ph.D. course is less time-consuming as one needs to write the entrance exam once after graduation. The Integrated Ph.D. is a research program and it is mainly for Science and engineering and Technology courses. You can also consider this course as a dual degree program for 5 years where you can study both the courses of master’s and Ph.D. In the first two years, the candidates need to study for the master’s course, and then they will focus completely on the research work or the core Ph.D. course for the coming three years.

Some prestigious colleges and universities there in India where you can pursue your Ph.D. Below I am giving you some details about exams for regular Ph.D. courses:-

  • CSIR NET Exam

  • UGC-NET for JRF (the most popular one)

  • TIFR (TATA Institute of Fundamental Research)

  • DBT JRF Biotech Entrance Test

  • ICMR Junior Research Fellowship

  • JRF-GATE

There are many other universities where you can apply for a regular Ph.D. course. Different Universities have their criteria and entrance exams through which they select candidates for Ph.D. programs.

List of exams for Integrated PhD:-

  • IIT Joint Admission Test

  • ISSER Tirupati Integrated Ph.D. Admission Test

  • IISC Bangalore Ph.D. Admission Test

  • Indian Institute of Astrophysics M.Tech Ph.D. Admission Test

Like regular Ph.D. programs, Universities also organize their entrance exams for Integrated Ph.D. courses. It is always advisable to check the official website of the University or the institution to know more and updated information about the entrance exam and course you wants to pursue.

I hope the above-given details are helpful for you. If you have any more queries about it feel free to ask in the comment section.

Best wishes
