If you are a general Category student of Punjab region you may get Computer Science & Engineering at Derabassi Campus else there is no chance for CSE in Thapar because its cutoff for CSE is above 90 percentile. You can go for EC branch in Thapar.
I won't suggest you for a year drop. According to me you should continue with you engineering.

Thapar is a good engineering college if you are getting your desired branch and can accomodate the fee structure you should go for it. But if you are not getting your desired branch then it would be waste to study in the institute, so you should prefer a year drop in that scenario. However, you can expect your admisson in thapar in the last round.
