SC ST students are exempted completely from the tuition fee in IIT and NIT and also those who are most economically backward it is from general OBC category and his family income is less than 1 lakh per year are  also waived from the tuition fee.

so if you have a candidate belonging to SC ST category then you don't need to worry about tuition fee at all.

There would be no intitution who are going to provide free education unless you got a scholarship.No its not true.Every one has to pay.The fee structure is as follows:

1st year:

ST/SC/PWD(Hosteller):Rs 18,401

ST/SC/PWD(Day scholar): Rs 13,401

2nd year:

ST/SC/PWD(Hosteller):Rs 8351 

ST/SC/PWD(Day scholar): Rs 4351

3rd year:

T/SC/PWD(Hosteller):Rs 8351

ST/SC/PWD(Day scholar): Rs 4351

4th year:

T/SC/PWD(Hosteller):Rs 9351

ST/SC/PWD(Day scholar): Rs 4351

The data is of current year.It may vary in the next year but will be approx the same.

Its just a rumour you have got frankly you'll be asked to pay a fee but on the other hand you'll get various scholarship from the givgyou can apply and you'll be funded as well
