I think someone has shared you wrong information because the NIT Durgapur is very good college.However, placements in 2019 saw a dip in number as 70-75 only students got placement where the highest package was around 50LPA and average being 9 LPA.The top branch in terms of placement was Computer Science and Mechanical engineering was 2nd highest in terms of placement.
You can go for the college if you are hardworking and dedicated towards career.
