Well I am from IT  dept. In IIEST,Shibpur so there would be a tinge of biasness but you won't be directed wrong so don't worry.
I had the same doubt whether I.T will be a good choice? But as time passed,I came to the following conclusion :-

• Information Technology in IIEST is one of the best department of the institute.
• Placements:-In IIEST ,I.T has the highest no. Of placements each year.Students get regularly selected intoTech giants likeGoogle,Microsoft,Adobe,Directietc.This year the highest package was  40 Lpa(highest ctc given to indian undergrads.)offered by ADOBE,Microsoft inc.
• Internship:-Our department is blessed with innumerous internship opportunities.students have been selected in google HQ(mountain view,CA,USA), Microsoft HQ  (redmond,VA,USA),Microsoft (Bangalore,India) and lots of other product based companiesfor internship.Also students get selected in Google summer of code(Gsoc) internship.

Research :the department has ample amount of running research project at any given instance of time. Research topics include :-Computational complexity, digital geometry,bioinformatics,cellular automata etc.

Departmental seniors:I.T department has the best seniors among all the branches.Not only they are helpful but also they act as mentor in shaping your skillset in the digital world.

So IT dept. in IIEST,Shibpur is the best place to enjoy asa well as learn and it offers higher placements and research facilities than IIIT,Gwalior so I would prefer IT in IIEST.

The final choice is yours , choose wisely...
