hi dk
The first thing you should do is make sure there is someone around to check on you. Most fevers are simply a sign that your immune system is doing its job and fighting off a bacterium or virus that is trying to do you harm. But occasionally a fever can be the first symptom of a serious illness, so you should make sure there is a friend or family member who will look in on you once or twice a day and call for help if you become seriously ill or incapacitated. The second thing you should do, depends how high the fever is. If an adult has a fever over 104F (40C), that is high enough to cause brain damage. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, naprosyn, etc., or acetominophen, can bring the fever down quickly and safely. If an adult has a fever lower than 104F, and is able to rest comfortably, it is generally best to allow the fever to do its work of making white blood cells comfortable and pathogens uncomfortable. When the fever is rising, the person feels cold, and will want to be covered with blankets, which is what should be done. When the fever is dropping, the person feels hot, usually will break into a sweat, and should be uncovered. Children can safely tolerate a higher fever, up to 106F.
