A few years ago, the idea of combining BTech in Computer Science Engineering (CSE) with emerging technologies might have seemed far-fetched. However, with the rapid evolution of computer science, colleges face challenges in providing specialised studies due to the sheer number of new and existing subjects.
The demand for specific skill sets varies widely across companies. For instance, one company might be working on a project using PHP, while another could be developing similar products with Python. This dynamic nature of the industry highlights why a single degree, such as a BTech in CSE, may not be sufficient to prepare students for specialised roles.
To address this, BTech programmes now offer various specialisations, such as BTech in CSBS, BTech in Blockchain, and BTech in Data Mining. In this article, we will be reading about a new specialisation- BTech CSE with DevOps.
First, let us discuss BTech CSE and DevOps separately. It will help us to understand the need for a specialised BTech degree in CSE with DevOps.
BTech CSE full form is Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science Engineering. It is a full-time engineering course of four years at the undergraduate level. In this programme, students study a range of subjects such as Data Structures, Computer Networks, Computer Architecture, Operating Systems, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Cloud Computing, and more.
BTech CSE provides a broad introduction to these computer science-related topics but fails to provide specialised knowledge to students. That is why many colleges have introduced this concept of BTech CSE integration with other specialisations such as AI, ML, IoT, Cloud Computing, Data Mining, Blockchain, and yes DevOps.
DevOps stands for Development and Operations. It is a methodology that aims to integrate and streamline the processes of software development and IT operations to deliver software quickly and efficiently.
In simple terms, DevOps is about increasing collaboration between development (Dev) and operations (Ops) teams. The primary goal of DevOps is to enhance the speed and quality of software delivery.
How does DevOps achieve this? The answer lies in automation. DevOps team uses a set of practices and tools to automate the software development and operational processes. This approach shortens the software development lifecycle and helps maintain high quality throughout.
Like all BTech degrees, this specialisation is also of four-year duration which is provided only in full-time mode. As of now, Shoolini University Solan and School of Computer Science- UPES Dehradun are the only providers of B Tech CSE DevOps. If you have completed your 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects- you can gain admission to this course.
Marks scored in JEE Main and CUET UG entrance exams are the basis for B Tech CSE DevOps admission. If you have not appeared for these exams, you can still gain admission by passing Shoolini University's multiple choice and UPESEAT entrance tests (respective).
The total cost of the BTech CSE with DevOps ranges between Rs. 10.0 lakhs to Rs. 12.0 lakhs (excluding accommodation). It is advisable to check the fee structure before admission as it is subject to change.
It is important to know what you will study if you decide to gain admission to BTech CSE DevOps. In the table below, we have compiled the semester-wise syllabus of this specialisation taught at Shoolini University.

BTech CSE with DevOps is a newly introduced programme and should be chosen by those specifically interested in pursuing a career in DevOps. One potential limitation of this specialisation compared to a general B.Tech in CSE is eligibility for certain positions.
Since it is a new specialisation, there can be challenges in qualifying for roles in government departments and PSUs at present. However, the situation can change in the future.
Yes, DevOps is part of computer science as it involves integrating software development and IT operations. It uses computer science principles for automation, system management, and optimising the software development lifecycle.
The average salary for a DevOps Engineer in India is around Rs. 8.4 lakhs per annum, as per the Ambition Box.
DevOps stands for Development and Operations. It is a methodology or model that aims to enhance the speed and quality of software delivery.
The curriculum includes subjects like DevOps Overview, Continuous Integration, Test Automation, and Agile Development Methodology, along with general CSE subjects.
Graduates of BTech CSE with DevOps can pursue careers as DevOps Engineers, DevOps Architects, Cloud Engineers, or Software Engineers.
