Along with entrance tests and counselling sessions, some other basic qualifications are also looked at, for enrolling in music courses. These include some basic education and other norms. These are:-

For Undergraduate Music Courses

  • The candidate must have cleared 10th and +2, with a minimum aggregate of 50% or above in the latter.

For Postgraduate Music Courses

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or an undergraduate degree with music as honours or a subject, with a minimum aggregate of 45% or above.

  • Most of the institutes conduct an entrance exam test with a cut-off percentage.

  • The candidates who have cleared the exam are asked to attend the counselling before their selection is finalized.

Music Entrance Exams

The selection of candidates is mostly based on merit and counselling. Some institutes prefer Entrance exams, but these are institutional level exams or CET (Common Entrance Test). This is applicable for both Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses. But students aspiring for PhD are supposed to attend the UGC-NET exam.

Common Entrance Test (CET) for Under Graduate and Post Graduate

These are MCQ type exams, curated by the employees of the college depending on the course or courses the exam is supposed to help choose candidates for.

Example: BMI University Lucknow Entrance Exam, Annamalai University Entrance Exam, BHU Performing Arts Entrance Exam, Bangalore University Entrance Exam, BHU PET, DUET, MGU CAT.

UGC-NET (University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test) for PhD.

It is considered as the top-most entrance exam for the postgraduates. The rank obtained by a candidate in this exam is considered for many opportunities that the candidate may or may not consider.
