Our country, “India” is a land of diversity. With a different culture present in every few kilometres covered by land. With each culture comes a set of music and other practices which is identical to them. As time progressed, more research was done on these and academic records were made. Today, the students of music learn this knowledge to contribute to the Vast and diverse Music Industry of India.
India, with the many languages, it comes in, also has different Film Industries which creates opportunities for these talents. Freelancing or working alongside a band is also an option for aspiring talents in the music industry.
The eligibility criteria for Music courses are simpler in comparison to other courses, but more weightage is given to the talent of the candidate amidst everything else.
Along with entrance tests and counselling sessions, some other basic qualifications are also looked at, for enrolling in music courses. These include some basic education and other norms. These are:-
The candidate must have cleared 10th and +2, with a minimum aggregate of 50% or above in the latter.
Most of the institutes do not insist on an entrance exam. But if there is an entrance exam, the students will be selected based on a cut-off mark, which will be decided by the college.
Bachelor’s degree in music or an undergraduate degree with music as honours or a subject, with a minimum aggregate of 45% or above.
Most of the institutes conduct an entrance exam test with a cut-off percentage.
The candidates who have cleared the exam are asked to attend the counselling before their selection is finalized.
The selection of candidates is mostly based on merit and counselling. Some institutes prefer Entrance exams, but these are institutional level exams or CET (Common Entrance Test). This is applicable for both Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses. But students aspiring for PhD are supposed to attend the UGC-NET exam.
Common Entrance Test (CET) for Under Graduate and Post Graduate
These are MCQ type exams, curated by the employees of the college depending on the course or courses the exam is supposed to help choose candidates for.
Example: BMI University Lucknow Entrance Exam, Annamalai University Entrance Exam, BHU Performing Arts Entrance Exam, Bangalore University Entrance Exam, BHU PET, DUET, MGU CAT.
UGC-NET (University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test) for PhD.
It is considered as the top-most entrance exam for the postgraduates. The rank obtained by a candidate in this exam is considered for many opportunities that the candidate may or may not consider.
In the field of music, there are more opportunities in the private entertainment sector. These offer better pay as well as job opportunities that suit the taste of a student. Job security is purely dependent on your performance. If you have the skills, people will be willing to pay good money for your job.
In the Government sector, the job opportunities are available in AIR (All India Radio), Commission of Fine Arts, National Capital Arts, and Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Arts, Government Colleges, etc.

Bachelor of Arts in Music or Bachelor of Music is usually a 3-year long course, but some universities are offering 4-year courses as well. Under the current conditions of the pandemic, no word of confirmation can be made on the future of this field. With no sort of public gathering being permitted and legal restrictions over the working environment, most of the works in this field have come to a halt for now.
