Hi aman,

since both the branches transportation system engineering and geotechnical engineering are not having great scope in india till date but though I would prefer to take admission with geotechnical engineering at iit kharagpur as from last 5 to 6 years geotechnical engineering is increasing scope as well as iit kharagpur has stronger alumni network than iit guwahati .

Hope it helps!!!

Hello Aman Dubey,

Well, my friend did my masters in Geotechnical Engineering from IIT Kanpur. First you may have to decide what is your future goal. If it is industry I mean consultancy or teaching (in good institutes like IIT,NIT or BITS) your demands could be different.

Geotechnical is very vast and most of the people confine it to foundation engineering. It is just like tip of the ice berg in geotechnics. You could be a tunnel engineer, Marine geotechnical engineer, a Geotechnical earthquake engineer or worst could be some geotextile sales manager. Your career will proceed based on the initial break you get. This is applicable to all branches of civil engineering which includes structural engineering. The best thing for a geotechnical engineer when he comes out of an IIT could be a campus placement in good company which does true consultancy business. In my case I had an extreme passion towards tunnelling and I kept on reading Books, learnt softwares etc. I happened to get a campus selection to CH2Mhil and from there I got good contacts and people kept on calling me to different firms. So it initial break is very important in all civil engineering branches.

If it is PhD then I would recommend to do it than structures since your goal should be teaching then . To have a good career in teaching , you need to get into IITs or NITs. The real bench mark in these places are publications. Structural engineering is a saturated field and most of the problems are addressed. In geotechnics even if you change a soil type it becomes a new problem. For eg. Tunnelling in Silty sand, or clay (or diff drainage conditions) are different problems. Geotechnical earthquake engineering is another field where you can publish with a bit of easiness (as compared to structures). So for PhD geotechnical is big yes yes.

Thank you and all the best...
